Wakefield ACES Good News Bulletin May 2008
Adult Learners Week!
17-23 May
The aim of Adult learners week was to celebrate learners and raise the profile of learning in our area. Centres across the district were involved in promoting their courses and facilities by holding a range of events, here are just an example of the events held:
- Five Towns Resource and Technology Centre, Welbeck Street, Castleford held two drop-in sessions promoting Health & Social Care and Childcare courses across the district. Refreshments were provided and potential learners were able to meet with the tutors who were on hand to explain all about the courses.
- Chesneys Centre, Regent Street, Featherstone decided to hold an open day with opportunities to try your hand at various activities including card making, soft furnishing, stained glass craft, sewing, tea bag folding, cake decorating! The day was a great success and staff at the centre were able to promote all the courses that will be running in September 2008.
- Havercroft and Ryhill Community Centre, off Mulberry Avenue, Havercroft displayed learners work throughout the centre so new learners could get a flavour of what was on offer.
- Manygates Adult Education Centre, Manygates Lane, Sandal displayed learners' art and fused glass work, receiving really positive feedback.
The Winners!
AWARDS - Four of our learners have been successful in gaining Adult Learner Awards this year and were presented with their Awards at the Regional Ceremony at Leeds Town Hall on 20 May 2008.
John Redford has been chosen as Wakefield Adult Education Service learner of the year. He is attending the Homebuilder course at Manygates.
Caroline Simpson, who is currently studying CLAiT at Chesneys Centre and already achieved English and Maths and Anatomy and Physiology qualifications, has progressed on to Wakefield College to take a pre-nursing course, as she wants to be a paramedic. Caroline has been awarded the Wakefield College Adult Learner Award.
John Banks has won the Open College Network OCN Award. John is studying Art at Havercroft and Ryhill Community Learning Centre.
Nicky Britton has been awarded the "Make Your Mark" award, a government sponsored award for the under 30s successful in enterprise/business. Nicky attends the Homebuilder course at Manygates.

Sharing the Success of Family Learning
The Family Learning team are currently promoting the Computers Don't Byte course, which is running in a number of schools across the district. The aim is to raise parental awareness of how to keep children safe on-line, in line with DCSF directives.
