Julie Carritt, Centre Manager of St Mary's Centre, The Circle, Pontefract was delighted to meet HRH The Duke of York to receive two awards at The Duke of York Community Initiative Awards on the 12th October at the Conisbrough Centre, Doncaster.

The Duke of York's Community Initiative is sponsored by the St Williams Foundation, which supports community projects throughout Yorkshire and Humberside. Julie accepted the "Community Initiative Award" on behalf of the centre and the "Community Leadership Award" was presented to Julie herself.

Peer-referencing Project

The Quality Improvement Agency, which supports the quality of delivery in the further education sector, recently launched its Support for Excellence programme. This will provide funding support of £20,000 to each of 125 groups nationally whose proposals for peer referencing and bench-marking are approved for support.

Wakefield Council's LSC-funded delivery sections (ACES and WBL) have taken the opportunity through networking, to form a group with Stockton and York Councils, and Gateshead College, to participate in the Support for Excellence programme. The expression of interest was successful, and the project will now go live.

In the meantime, Wakefield and Stockton have already shared some practice in that colleagues from Stockton came to Wakefield to do a sample of class observations alongside our observers. In return, we will be involved in the validation of Stockton's self-assessment report.
