Introduction to the Centre
The Centre opened in September 1993 having taken over the premises of the former Manygates Middle School in July of that year. Its main use was, as it still is, as a venue for adult education and as the administrative headquarters for the Adult and Community Education Service.
The initial programme attracted nearly 2,000 adult learners and has expanded to accommodate nearer 2,500 almost as much as current capacity allows. From the start the centre has also operated as a facility for the voluntary and community sector, as a venue for a substantial programme of classes delivered by the U3A.
Space has recently been created for the new administrative accommodation for the ACES. Its completion has given the centre an opportunity to increase public use of the building and provide new learning opportunities.
