Hemsworth is a bustling community, serving what was an important mining area. The College's surrounding areas include a number of small villages, some of which have suffered from decline and deprivation. The College works hard with its community in the regeneration of the area. Close relationships exist between all levels of staff and this promotes an open and welcoming environment for students', parents and visitors. The College is here to serve the community and to a large degree, attempts to reflect all those positive traditions and values associated with locality.
The Adult Education provision within the college started in 1998, offering mostly non-accredited courses, such as basic computer courses, family tree, and yoga. Primarily the operation was based in the Sports Centre with a Community Development Officer in place to facilitate and promote courses.
After a re-vamp a Family Learning Centre was created and the programme has grown considerably over the years offering more accredited courses for example French, which has grown Tremendously this year. We are also taking courses out into the community to our outreach centres and working with our pyramid schools, offering parents the opportunity to upgrade their Numeracy and Literacy skills and working with parents on the Share project 'Lets get Moving' which involves parents helping their children with basic physical activities and parents are encouraged to portfolio build to gain accreditation.
